Dear colleagues,
As we gear up for the bustling new academic year, our division is deeply entrenched in vital summer projects. From bolstering campus infrastructure to overseeing conference programs and ensuring classrooms are fall-ready, each team contributes to Rice’s ongoing growth and success. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in these initiatives, recognizing their pivotal role in our mission.
While on the topic of success, I would like to take a moment to celebrate the achievements of several OF&S teams.
- Transformational Technology & Innovation and HR teamed up to develop a chatbot that will launch later this month. The HR Chatbot, designed to enhance the customer experience, will be available to answer questions from community members at any time of day. You can find out more about it in this month’s Fast Five.
- A team of our talented chefs—Susana Cabrera, Ernesto Perez, Joseph Stayshich, and Sing Yam—have been awarded a gold medal in their first American Culinary Federation Chef competition! This prestigious achievement highlights their creativity, adaptability, and culinary expertise. Please join me in celebrating their success and dedication.
Looking ahead to the academic year, I'm thrilled to announce the launch of a new pilot program within our division. This program offers units the opportunity to employ a centrally funded student intern. Later this summer, OF&S units can submit a project proposal for consideration. To ensure the program's success, I invite those interested in serving on the program committee to submit an application by Monday, June 24. This committee will oversee project selection, intern assignment, and program evaluation. I look forward to supporting the work of this committee and program!
As highlighted in the President's recent Wellness Wednesday announcement, our University is committed to caring for its community. With so much hard work underway this summer, I want to emphasize the importance of prioritizing your well-being. I encourage you to participate in Wellness Wednesdays and to make use of Rice's paid time off to recharge and rejuvenate. We are proud that Elmer Whitehead is leading the first Wellness Wednesday with a beginner's Tai Chi course. Finally, don't forget there are other options to consider when thinking about wellness, including discussing potential flexible work arrangements for the summer with your supervisor. These University benefits are in place to foster a supportive work environment where each member thrives by embracing self-care and work-life balance.
Finally, in the midst of our efforts, let's take a moment to recognize the significance of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday. This historic day celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, symbolizing progress toward freedom and equality. It's a poignant reminder of the journey we've traveled and the work that still lies ahead in our pursuit of justice and inclusion.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to our shared goals. Be sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming summer divisional event on Wednesday, July 10, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm in the R Room at Rice Stadium! It's an opportunity to take a well-deserved break and connect with colleagues.
Warm regards,
Kelly
