In this edition of Rice Journeys, we meet Carlos Garcia, Associate Vice President for Research Operations and Administration. Since joining Rice in 1991, he has played a key role in building the university’s research infrastructure and supporting collaboration across departments. His journey, from the Chemistry Store to leading major research operations, reflects a career defined by innovation, adaptability, and dedication to Rice’s mission.
Tell us about your career journey at Rice. How did you get started, and what roles have you held along the way?
I began my career at Rice in 1991 as a Safety Specialist and Purchasing Coordinator in the Chemistry Store of the Chemistry Department.
After 10 years in Chemistry, I transitioned to the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (now the Smalley-Curl Institute) as Administrative Director, where I witnessed the launch of initiatives like the Shared Equipment Authority (SEA), RSTEM, and the Interdisciplinary Research Support Office.
In 2011, I joined the Office of Research as Director of Research Development and Infrastructure, a role that evolved into my current position as Associate Vice President for Research Operations and Administration. Today, I provide leadership and support to several key units, including the Office of Sponsored Projects, Research Integrity, Technology Transfer, Office of Defense Research Advancement, Shared Facilities, Interdisciplinary Research Support Office, and RSTEM.
How has Rice supported your professional growth and development?
Over the years, I’ve taken advantage of many professional development programs offered by the university. I completed the “Crucial Conversations” and “Influencer” courses, both of which have been invaluable to my professional growth. These programs equipped me with practical tools for navigating discussions where colleagues may hold differing perspectives or propose alternative solutions. “Crucial Conversations,” in particular, emphasized the importance of creating safe and grounding discussions with facts rather than interpretations—skills that have significantly strengthened my communication and collaboration with my colleagues.
In addition, I have audited accounting courses to enhance my financial literacy. This training has been essential for making informed business decisions and has strengthened my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which I apply across all the roles I have held at Rice
What accomplishments or experiences have shaped your career the most?
Helping launch the Interdisciplinary Research Support Office (IRSO) was one of the defining experiences of my career. Creating a centralized support structure for large interdisciplinary projects gave faculty and funders confidence that complex initiatives had the administrative expertise needed to succeed.
Earlier, while managing CBEN, I helped redesign financial systems in Banner to improve project reporting and accountability. Later, when launching the Shared Equipment Authority, we developed tracking systems that helped support its growth into a multimillion-dollar operation.
Across these experiences, I learned how to build effective systems and lead through change in complex organizations—skills that continue to guide me today.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career at Rice or looking to grow internally?
Rice is a fantastic place to build a career. Take the opportunity to learn new skills. Explore different departments and roles to find what interests you. The university environment offers diverse experiences if you’re open to learning.
What habits or practices have helped you succeed at Rice?
The habits that have contributed most to my success at Rice are a commitment to continuous learning, a willingness to embrace change, and an investment in building meaningful relationships. I strive to remain curious, seek out new perspectives, and adapt as the needs of the university and its community evolve.
Equally important, I have always stayed connected to the broader purpose of my work. Understanding how my efforts contribute to Rice's mission of excellence in education, research, and service has inspired me to approach each challenge as an opportunity to create lasting value. That sense of purpose, combined with collaboration and a growth mindset, has enabled me to remain resilient, continue evolving, and help others succeed along the way.
Finally, what’s your favorite spot on campus?
One of my favorite places on campus is the Ray Courtyard. The canopy of trees provides excellent shade, making it an ideal place to read—especially during the spring and fall.
