What started off as an expected crowd of a few thousand quickly became one of the largest fan gatherings Rice has ever helped host.

On June 20th, approximately 10,000 Dutch soccer fans gathered at Rice Stadium before beginning the iconic Oranje Fanwalk, a 2.5-mile march to the NRG stadium ahead of a FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match between the Netherlands and Sweden. The event's success—and the university's ability to safely accommodate thousands of visitors—was made possible by the hard work and coordination of Rice staff across multiple departments. By the time the procession reached NRG Stadium, the crowd had reached roughly 25,000 fans.

The event brought international attention to Houston and showcased Rice’s role as an official Houston World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter.

Months of Planning Behind the Scenes

While the fanwalk lasted only a few hours, planning began months earlier.

Teams from the Rice University Police Department (RUPD), Rice’s Emergency Medical Services (REMS), the Rice Office of Special Events Services (ROSES), Rice Athletics, Parking and Transportation and other departments began meeting more than two months before the event to coordinate logistics.

Rice also worked closely with the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond (KNVB), the Dutch fan club that organizes the Oranje Fanwalk, as well as representatives from the Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee.

A Community Effort

Supporting an event of this scale required a campuswide effort. Over 100 Rice employees volunteered during the fanwalk, joined by approximately two-thirds of RUPD officers and more than 10 REMS emergency medical technicians. Rice also provided thousands of bottles of water and sports drinks, while a first-aid bus served as both a medical resource and cooling station.

The event highlighted the willingness of the Rice community to step up and help. Many neighbors also came outside to watch and participate in the excitement as the march passed through surrounding neighborhoods, helping create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors from around the world.

A Growing Role on the World Stage

The Oranje Fanwalk demonstrated Rice’s growing role in supporting major international events and highlighted the university’s partnership with Houston as the city hosts FIFA World Cup activities.

And the story may not be over. If the Netherlands advances further in the tournament, Houston could host another Dutch match — and another sea of orange could once again begin its journey from Rice.
