Recognition is a simple but powerful way to show appreciation. Whether it’s for everyday reliability or truly exceptional work, taking a moment to acknowledge someone’s contributions helps create a workplace where people feel seen, valued, and motivated to do their best.
About the OF&S Recognition Program
The Operations, Finance & Support (OF&S) division recognizes individuals and teams through a series of awards that shine a light on the dedication, ingenuity, and hard work its staff bring to campus each day. Among the most distinguished honors are the Excellence in Customer Service Award and the Operational Excellence Award—two awards that highlight employees who make exceptional contributions to the Rice community and support Rice’s mission.
Excellence in Customer Service Awards for FY25
This award is given each semester to individuals or teams who consistently deliver outstanding service and help build strong, positive relationships across the university. Recipients are nominated by OF&S managers and selected for their commitment to creating excellent experiences for others.
Lisa Smithies (Budget & Finance) was recognized for her friendly, efficient, and effective approach to service—qualities that make a lasting impact across the campus community.
Lewis Coleman (OIT) earned recognition for his exceptional IT support to the Budget & Finance team. His professionalism, calm presence, and clear communication continue to set a high standard across the division.
Operational Excellence Awards for FY25
The Operational Excellence Award is OF&S’s highest honor, given annually to a team or individual whose work significantly improves how the division operates. It recognizes impact through innovation, efficiency, and collaboration.
This year’s award went to the Strategic Sourcing & Procurement Team (Budget & Finance) for making a big difference across campus. In FY25, the team completed 86 projects across 46 departments, helping the university save $2.8 million through smarter spending and better deals. Altogether, their work had a total impact of more than $8 million, including both savings and added benefits from smarter purchasing decisions over time. Just as important as the numbers is how they get there – by working openly and closely with others, showing the kind of teamwork and transparency OF&S is committed to.
