The Rice Information Security Office is proud to announce the implementation of Netskope, a cloud security platform designed to safeguard sensitive data stored and shared in Rice’s cloud environments, including Rice Box, Rice Google, and Rice Microsoft 365. This initiative strengthens data protection efforts while ensuring compliance with government regulations such as FERPA and HIPAA.

What is Netskope?

Netskope is a data loss prevention and security solution that monitors cloud-based activity for potential risks. The system alerts the Information Security team when private information is shared too broadly or when malware is detected. In cases where an alert is triggered, the team may also follow up to confirm data sharing practices align with Rice’s security policies. By providing real-time monitoring and proactive alerts, Netskope enhances data security while maintaining a seamless user experience.

How Does It Work?

Unlike restrictive security tools, Netskope operates in a way that supports rather than disrupts Rice’s collaborative and open environment. The platform does not block or limit user activities. Instead, it equips the Information Security team with the insights needed to quickly address security concerns with minimal impact on daily operations. The deployment of Netskope reflects Rice’s commitment to protecting institutional data while fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration. The Information Security team will continue refining Netskope’s functionality to meet the evolving needs of the Rice community.
