H.O.O.T.S. Turns Tailgates into Scholarships

Amidst the smoke of a sizzling BBQ at a Rice University football game in 1998, former employees Johnny Gomez and Nelson Correa sparked an idea that would transform tailgating into a powerful force for good. This casual conversation launched the High Order of Owl Tailgating Society (H.O.O.T.S.), an organization dedicated to fundraising and supporting educational opportunities for the children of university staff.

H.O.O.T.S. has grown significantly since granting its first scholarship in 2000. Originally conceived to benefit children of Facilities & Capital Planning and Housing & Dining employees, the program has expanded to include children of RUPD and Parking & Transportation employees. Since its inception, H.O.O.T.S. has generously donated more than $92,000 to deserving students.

Scholarships are primarily funded by tailgate food sales and donations. In recent years, the fundraising efforts have gone beyond the hedges to include partners, such as construction contractors and architecture and engineering firms. With donations ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, H.O.O.T.S. has been able to make a significant impact for those in need.

There are several ways community members can join H.O.O.T.S. in making a difference:

  • Volunteer at an upcoming event. H.O.O.T.S. is actively seeking more volunteers. Contact H.O.O.T.S. President Diana DeSantiago (DeSantiago@rice.edu) for more information.
  • Donate to the Rice Annual Fund, designating H.O.O.T.S. as the main donation.
  • Attend a H.O.O.T.S. tailgate at an upcoming Rice Football home game. Starting two hours before kickoff, come to the big green tent near stadium gate 2 for great food, cold drinks, and a special Marching Owl Bad (the MOB) visit right before game time.
