Finance and Administration (F&A) has taken steps this semester to focus on customer service and enhanced user experience. Through strategic departmental changes and the introduction of new technology, the division continues to demonstrate its commitment to customer experience and efficiency. Updates within F&A include:

IT Excellence:

As of October 17, Grammarly/GrammarlyGO and Bing Chat Enterprise were made available to Rice faculty and staff. Grammarly is an AI tool that improves writing. Its premium version offers suggestions for more precise and improved writing. Bing Chat for Enterprise, powered by Microsoft's Bing, is a chat system that assists users. It simplifies tasks like creating reports or presentations, aiming to boost productivity.

HR Excellence:

The Performance Management Initiative has achieved an impressive 95% completion rate in the goal-setting phase. This outstanding accomplishment shows dedication to staff growth and development. The Fondren Library reached a 100% completion rate by the initial August 31 deadline, a notable achievement. Additionally, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, the Office of General Counsel, and Public Affairs are recognized for achieving 100% completion by the revised deadline. An Ice Cream Social is scheduled for these departments to celebrate their accomplishment. As a friendly reminder, the official Performance Management check-in process will begin December 5, and training is available for managers and employees.

Budget and Finance:

The Controller's Office recently reorganized to enhance its commitment to customer service. Key highlights of the reorganization are included below:

  • Formed the Finance Systems and Reporting group, which oversees the finance system aspects of iO.
  • Created Strategic Sourcing to elevate Rice’s negotiating power with vendors, improving purchasing processes and separating procurement from P2P.
  • Created a new position of Assistant Controller for Accounting Operations, which will streamline interactions with campus departments.
  • Created a new position of Assistant Vice President for Research and Cost Accounting to advance research administration and customer service externally while allowing current staff to concentrate on internal operations.
  • Expanded and restructured the Tax department to meet demands from increasing global engagements.
  • Rebranded the Cashier's Office to the Bursar’s Office to better reflect its functions.

Campus Safety:

After an interim appointment, Kathryn Cavender accepted the Associate Vice President of Campus Safety position. In this role, Kathyrn oversees the Rice University Police Department, Rice Crisis Management, and Environmental Health and Lab Safety.

Real Estate and Capital Excellence:

Under the guidance of Don Dennis, ‘81, the Real Estate and Facilities departments have flourished. By interlinking these groups, the F&A division has broadened its expertise for both internal and external projects. During his interim appointment, Don led the Real Estate and Capital Excellence initiative, contributed to developing the Ion space, initiated proposals for graduate housing, and broadened Rice's influence in the greater Houston area. The search for a permanent leader for this organization is underway.
