Embracing Our Community of Care: Season of Sharing and Blue Santa Toy Drive

As part of the OF&S strategic plan, OF&S remains steadfast in its mission to foster a Community of Care. This goal inspires efforts to cultivate an equitable, inclusive, and safe environment that promotes well-being and belonging for all campus community members. Two standout initiatives embodying this spirit are the Season of Sharing and RUPD’s Blue Santa Toy Drive.

Season of Sharing

Launched this year, the Season of Sharing program set out to offer relief to members of the OF&S community who were facing difficult financial circumstances, ensuring that they and their families could experience joy and care during the holiday season.

Through a thoughtful, double-blind gift exchange program, staff members nominated peers experiencing hardships. Participants were empowered to give and receive anonymously, ensuring dignity of all involved.

The results? A resounding success. Over 30 staff members and their families received wrapped gifts, household essentials, and gift cards for groceries and other critical items. The overwhelming generosity of OF&S teams reinforced a shared dedication to supporting each other.

Blue Santa Toy Drive

Equally impactful was the Blue Santa Toy Drive, spearheaded by RUPD in partnership with the Children’s Assessment Center (CAC). Located in Rice Village, the CAC provides a safe haven for sexually abused children and their families, offering them the care and treatment they need. By pooling resources across campus, the Rice community played a critical role in delivering holiday cheer to 14 families.

With drop-off points at locations such as the Fondren Library, the School of Engineering, Rice Children’s Campus, BRC, and Post Office, this initiative was a campus-wide effort. The School of Engineering Dean's Suite, Development and Alumni Relations Department, and Moody Center for the Arts helped fulfill families’ wish lists by collecting gifts at their holiday parties, ensuring every sponsored family experienced a brighter holiday season.

Both programs underscore the power of collective action in advancing a culture of care. Through meaningful gestures, they not only provide tangible support but also strengthen the bonds that make the campus community resilient and inclusive.
