Since 2006, the Rice EcoRep program has spearheaded environmentally-focused events and initiatives in partnership with the Office of Sustainability and Housing and Dining. This student-driven program within the Office of Sustainability spans Rice's 11 residential colleges, with two EcoReps in each college. They contribute to utility conservation, recycling, and environmental education projects, which contribute to Rice’s impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the university's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
EcoReps have been busy this semester with several programs, including:
- Sponsoring Cyanotype Printing events, a solar-powered printing method, for students to make and print designs on bags and t-shirts.
- Scheduling student trips to the Rice Farmers Market. This monthly event held in Rice Village showcases local food and agriculture vendors.
- Initiating campus nature walks where students learn about the importance of tree health and care led by Facilities & Capital Planning lead arborist Dawn Roth-Ehlinger.
- Hosting clothing swaps where students recycle their unused clothing to reduce waste and promote equity, allowing students to swap items they need for free. Leftover clothing is donated to Montrose’s Cottage Shop.
The EcoRep’s actions have a lasting impact at Rice. Richard Johnson ‘92, the Senior Executive Director for Sustainability, emphasized that EcoReps set an example for their peers and shape Rice’s culture. With each clothing exchange event, compost caddy distributed, and discussion about energy conservation, EcoReps cultivate an environment where sustainability is the expectation at Rice, not the exception.
Sustainability practices can be incorporated into the daily lives of all students, faculty, and staff. Community members who wish to become involved with the Office of Sustainability to support these efforts should contact sustainability@rice.edu.
