The United Way of Greater Houston is a pillar of the community. Its annual campaign provides funding for essential aid, crisis recovery, and a path to a brighter future. The Rice community has proudly partnered with the United Way for over three decades, demonstrating care for Houston families by donating nearly $3.9 million through its annual campaigns. Additional support has come through collaboration with the Kinder Institute, which provides valuable research insights that inform the United Way's strategies to address the challenges working Houstonians face.
Rice's 2024 United Way campaign has significantly progressed, achieving 82% of its $250,000 goal. To bring this campaign to a close at the end of March, the university is showcasing its love for the Houston community by transforming each Rice donation into a heart bearing the donor's name at the Rice Welcome Center. This display is a vibrant testament to Rice employees and retirees' generosity and community spirit.
The community spirit of Operations, Finance, & Support is evident in its actions and donations. In a recent creative fundraising effort, the division hosted a hotdog cookoff and sold breakfast tacos, which resulted in an impressive $23,384 in donations. These donations directly support 45% of working households in Houston struggling to afford basic necessities.
