Dear Rice community,
I’m excited to share an important update about the future of Will Rice College. Will Rice is scheduled for a major renovation and expansion, with a target completion in 2028. This initiative supports the university’s long-term plan to grow enrollment, maintain on-campus housing, and balance residential populations.
This project blends new construction with significant renovation. The existing commons will be replaced by a new multi-story building featuring a modern commons space with student residences above. In addition, the historic wing of Will Rice College will undergo a more comprehensive renovation focused on upgrading accessibility, preservation, and energy efficiency to enhance daily life within the college. When complete, the expansion will add approximately 65 new beds.
To support this work and minimize disruption to students, the recently refurbished Old Lovett College will be used as temporary “swing” housing during portions of the renovation period, allowing major phases of construction to occur while maintaining continuity within the residential college system.
The project is now entering its concept design phase. Following a competitive proposal process, William Rawn Associates has been selected as design architect, with Harrison Kornberg serving as executive architect. This phase, beginning in spring 2026, will focus on confirming program needs, evaluating site and design options, and developing preliminary plans. It will also include engagement with Will Rice College students and leadership.
We recognize that projects of this scale raise important questions, and we are committed to ongoing communication as planning progresses. Additional updates will be shared as key milestones are reached.
Thank you for your continued support as we invest in the future of our residential college system and the student experience at Rice.
Sincerely,
Kelly Fox
